President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act on August 16, which includes legislation that expands adult vaccine access. Starting January 1, 2023, all Medicare Part D plans will be required to cover all ACIP-recommended vaccines with no cost sharing. Beginning October 1, 2023, all state Medicaid programs will be required to do the same. These policies will give access to ACIP-recommended vaccines to nearly all U.S. adults with no out-of-pocket expense. Immunization uptake may increase as the cost-sharing barrier is removed.
For claims with dates of service on or after January 1, 2023, CMS is discontinuing the use of Certificates of Medical Necessity (CMNs) and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Information Forms (DIFs). The information from these forms is now available on either the claim itself or in the medical record. The removal of this requirement enables quicker access to care and eliminates excessive, duplicative administrative tasks.
Prescribing Authority Improves Access to COVID-19 Treatment
To further combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revised the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir), to authorize state-licensed pharmacists to prescribe it to eligible patients. Paxlovid is used to treat patients who are at high risk for developing severe COVID-19.
For some NewRx messages, Surescripts determined possible mismatched information between the NDC and Drug Description for Paxlovid. The NDC transmitted is for the original, full dose pack, but the Drug Description indicates reduced dosing for patients with certain levels of renal failure. At this time, there’s no awareness of harm to patients, but this issue is being treated as a potential patient safety issue.
The COVID pandemic further expanded the scope of community pharmacy and more than proved pharmacists’ impact on healthcare beyond prescription dispensing. The momentum created moved operations from a transaction-based approach to one more focused on proactive patient engagement and improved outcomes. With continuation of this high-touch method, you can transition customers into lifetime patients, and lifetime patients equal more revenue.
