Federal Trade Commission Launches Inquiry into PBMs
On June 7, 2022, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it will launch an inquiry into the largest pharmacy benefit managers in the United States. The inquiry aims to scrutinize PBMs’ business practices and highlight their impact on pharmacies, payers, doctors, and patients. Notices will be sent to the six largest PBMs in the U.S. Among them are CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, Inc., OptumRx, Inc., and Humana, Inc. The companies will have 90 days from the date they receive the order to respond. Find more information here.
CMS Increases Medicare Part B Reimbursements for Vaccines
Even though there’s still a lot of focus on COVID vaccines, don’t forget about administering vaccines for influenza, pneumococcal, and hepatitis B. CMS has nearly doubled the administration reimbursement of these vaccinations under Medicare Part B, with an increase from $16.94 to $30 per dose. So, not only will you be compensated more for services rendered, but you will also be helping your customers avoid contracting these infectious diseases.
FDA Launches Dietary Supplement Initiative to Broaden Understanding
Do you offer supplements to positively impact your bottom line and grow your business? The answer is probably yes considering that “market size was valued at USD 151.9 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9% from 2022 to 2030” according to Grand View Research.
Consumers are focused on general health and wellness more than ever, with over half of Americans taking supplements daily or on occasion. Though these supplements have benefits, they can also come with health risks – like adverse events. So, it’s important pharmacies stay informed and be prepared to counsel patients on whether supplements are right for them.
In an effort to build awareness, the FDA recently launched a new initiative, Supplement Your Knowledge, to help educate, inform, and broaden the understanding of dietary supplements. The many resources include special materials for healthcare professionals.
NCPDP Validation and Translation Errors for the Kansas Modular Medicaid System
The Kansas Medical Assistance Program (KMAP) has seen an increase in Point-of-Sale (POS) errors due to NCPDP compliance failures with the implementation of Electronic Data Interchange as a Service (EDIaaS). Currently, EDIaaS cannot send compliant responses with rejection codes to inform the provider why the transaction failed. So, as a workaround, KMAP has added invalid values, which will be allowed in the compliance checker so translations will pass and translate the transaction into the claims system for processing. Beginning October 2, 2022, invalid values will no longer be accepted. Please contact your POS vendor to ensure their software aligns with NCPDP standards.
Every pharmacy’s goal is to grow and maximize profits while simultaneously improving health outcomes. Keeping your software up to date is a vital part of making sure you have the tools you need to succeed. QS/1 has released Service Pack 19.1.38, and we encourage you to download and install it to take advantage of enhancements. This service pack includes:
Store Level Option to Use NP/PA When Available: Ensure the correct prescriber credentials are sent in the NCPDP AM03 Prescriber Segment and used for PMP reporting to avoid potential audit risks.
File Maintenance Scheduler Improvement: Purge all Tickler items entered before a set number of days regardless of status whenever the File Maintenance Scheduler is run for the Tickler file to improve system performance.
Workflow Daily Audit: Capture all workflow processes and personnel identification requirements for prescriptions, including customizing which queues are printed on the report.
Download the latest service pack from the Hub here or update from within your system.
Alert for California and Ohio pharmacies: To comply with new state regulations now in effect, update to SP 38A as soon as possible.
