COVID-19 Vaccine Billing Changes
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released new information regarding billing for COVID-19 vaccines. Starting January 1, 2022, Medicare Advantage Organizations (MAO) and Medicare-Medicaid Plans (MMP) will be required to pay for the COVID-19 vaccine and its administration (including approved booster doses) without cost sharing for beneficiaries enrolled in their plans. Currently, Medicare Part B covers the vaccine administration fee for all Medicare beneficiaries (and will still cover for patients who had standalone Part D Plans (PDPs)).
If you vaccinate patients enrolled in MAOs or MMPs, submit COVID vaccine claims to the respective plan. Original Medicare will not pay!
Documenting and submitting eCare Plans is easier than ever. The latest update to the RedSail Patient Chart includes a new template feature that allows you to create pre-built eCare Plan encounters for quick and easy submission to CPESN®/payer programs. Create a template for any type of encounter and use them as often or as little as you like. Plus, they can be edited as needed, too.

CMS Recognizes the Importance of Medical at Home Pharmacy
Our nation is aging! Research shows by 2040, 1 in 5 Americans will be age 65 or older. And according to Pharmacy Times, nearly half of independent pharmacies offer long-term care services to treat older Americans.
The COVID-19 pandemic not only highlighted the value of pharmacy, in general, but it also increased the demand for medical at home pharmacy services. The medical at home model allows patients to receive the same essential care they would receive in a long-term care facility in the comfort of their own homes.
Pharmacy groups, like the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA®), have long urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to acknowledge the importance of these services, which would result in reimbursements. Breakthrough – in December 2021, CMS issued guidance to Medicare Part D Sponsors clarifying that enhanced dispensing fees currently paid to LTC pharmacies for services such as special packaging and deliveries for residents of LTC facilities and ALFs would be allowable for a patient in a non-LTC facility setting who meets the same level of care.
