COVID-19 Booster & Nursing Homes
According to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, less than 50% of nursing home residents have received the recommended omicron booster. As America’s most vulnerable population, this puts them at risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19.
The American Health Care Association, National Center for Assisted Living, and LeadingAge sent a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, which presented an all-hands-on-deck campaign to improve COVID vaccination rates among seniors. Their approach requires collaboration between all healthcare providers (nursing homes, hospitals, physicians, and pharmacies), consumer groups, and government agencies (federal, state, and local).
Note: In December 2022, the White House announced nursing home staff can now administer booster shots, which is a win.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes provisions to lower prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries. Effective January 1, 2023, the IRA eliminated the deductible and imposed a statutory maximum beneficiary cost-sharing amount of $35 per one-month supply for Medicare Part D-covered insulins. However, the law allows for a 90-day grace period for implementation.
With COVID-19 cases on the rise again, the Biden Administration extended the nation’s public health emergency declaration – meaning it will last until mid-April unless it’s renewed again. This measure ensures continuation of special provisions for Medicaid and Medicare, free COVID-19 tests and vaccines, telehealth coverage, and pharmacists’ authority to practice at the top of their license.

It’s January! What does that mean for long-term care pharmacy in Congress? With the House controlled by Republicans and the Senate by Democrats, goals around provider status seem like a long shot. But let’s explore what the omnibus spending bill offers, and why state legislatures may be a more receptive audience.
The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit became law nearly 20 years ago, and since then, Medicare Part D has become very popular with enrollees and is the primary revenue source for LTC pharmacies. As with any benefit program, there have been changes – making a refresher on the basics a smart idea for any LTC pharmacist.
