In 2021, it was announced that all healthcare workers who worked for providers that received Medicare or Medicaid funding were required to get vaccinated. To continue protecting America’s most vulnerable population, CMS is now revising its guidance and survey procedures for all provider types related to assessing and maintaining compliance with the staff vaccination regulatory requirements.
The Department of Justice (DOJ), along with New York and Minnesota, filed an appeal with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals challenging a lower court ruling permitting the billion-dollar UnitedHealthcare-Change Healthcare. NCPA and AHA publicly called for the merger to be blocked in 2021 and continue to support the DOJ’s efforts.
The HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) has announced a new audit project called “Potentially Preventable Hospitalizations of Medicare-Eligible Skilled Nursing Facility Residents.” The OIG will focus on six conditions that cause inpatient hospitalizations (pneumonia, congestive heart failure, UTI, dehydration, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/asthma, and sepsis), and an audit will examine nursing home care provided prior to readmission.
The Biden administration seeks to improve the care provided at the poorest-performing nursing facilities. CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said, “Poor-performing nursing homes have the opportunity to improve, but if they fail to do so, the changes we are making to CMS’ Special Focus Facilities Program [SFF] will hold these facilities accountable for the health and safety of their residents.” Revisions to the SFF Program are effective immediately.
